PETROTA TRAIL

Petrota Trail is the continuation of the Synaxi trail. You leave the impressive rocky area behind and enter another landscape, with different vegetation, dominated by kermes oaks. If you look towards the sea, your eyes are drawn by two strange forms on the coast. Starting from the dirt road. You will find Maroneia Trails signs.

Ancient Theatre of Maroneia

Altitude: 71m

You will reach the Ancient Theater of Maroneia 1.5 km away from the start of the trail. It was constructed in the Hellenistic period and remodeled in Roman times. Three rows of stone seats of the caveat, the central and the horseshoe-shaped conduit of the orchestra and the building of the Roman scene are preserved.

Marmaritsa Beach

Altitude: 10m

The Marmaritsa beach is part of the rift of Maroneia – Makris – ancient marble quarry. Majestic deep blue sea, panoramic view of the Thracian Sea and islands Samothrace and Thasos are also visible from the beach.

Synaxi beach

Altitude: 8m

Synaxis – Coastal Archaeological Site. Visitors can admire the archaeological site, where a Byzantine basilica with frescoes is built on the ruins of an ancient temple and enjoy the impressive beach, with the large pebbles and the blocks of monzodiorite rock.

Petrota Geological Structures

Altitude: 5m

Geological structures are known as “Poseidon’s coastguards”, since they guard the Thracian Sea. They are approximately 3.00 m high and they were created by the erosion of a volcano-conglomerate, a rock forme by adhered volcanic pebbles.
